Traditional wedding

In the simplest sense, a traditional wedding is a wedding ordained in a church, usually Catholic. By default, Pinoys are heavy on tradition. This is probably because of Catholic conversions done to natives during some points in the period of Spanish colonization (1521 – 1898).

The ceremony of the traditional wedding is officiated by a priest in front of the husband-and-wife-to-be’s friends and family. The preference of church weddings represents lineage and culture, though the religion is not originally Pinoy. It is Western.

Modern nuptials

Now, a modern wedding is both similar and different to a traditional one. It is similar because it includes elements from old-school ceremonies, such as having a layperson (pastor or priest) officiate the proceedings. However it is different in a sense that it doesn’t have to take place only in a church. It can occur in settings like a beach, lake, or hotel.

The Filipino’s definition of a modern wedding varies from the West’s view. Westerners believe that shacking up (or living in together) equates to a marital union. In this article, we’ll stick to the Pinoy’s view.

So which one?
